United States

The overall vegetable season in the Pacific Northwest was good with no major hiccups to report, however the market is fairly tight due to demand from the Midwest region and Europe.

Potatoes in the Northwest began about a week later than usual.   Autumn wet and cool weather set in during the last days of September into October.  The season in Washington and Oregon are completed with average yields and good quality.  However, there is still concern that current raw potato volume will not be enough to keep plants running at capacity in order to meet the current demand.   Processors in both the Midwest region and Canada are looking to Oregon, Washington and Idaho to meet their shortfalls this season.

Weather in the Midwest area the past growing season not ideal with much rain and various storms in spring and early summer. Plantings on all crops there were slow and delayed.  Sweet corn harvest in the Midwest ended 3 weeks later than last season and overall many of the crops in the Midwest this season proved to be a challenge.   Processors throughout the Midwest are on the market for green peas and corn and the struggle will be to get to 2020 season as all products are in short supply, including potatoes.

Washington State’s red raspberry crop was reduced by about 12% compared to last year due to rain during the harvest season which sent more product to juice.   I.Q.F Raspberry prices are on the rise and most processors are sold out.   This along with the tentative situation in Chile will make for a tight I.Q.F raspberry market.

Canada

Rain and cold weather slowed down much of the Canadian potato crop.   The province of Manitoba ended their potato harvest sooner than anticipated due to frost hitting the area in early November.   The rains in that area delayed harvest and prevented farmers from getting all of the crop out of the ground before the frost arrived.  Two processors in the area will be affected by this outcome and surplus potatoes coming from Idaho to make up the shortage is unlikely this season due to winter weather arriving in Idaho early.

Mexico

Broccoli and Cauliflower growing regions are currently in peak production.  Weather in Mexico has been sunny and warm.  All processors are now running at capacity with good yields and excellent quality.   Demand is high for cauliflower due to the rice cauliflower boom. 

Guatemala

Broccoli season in Guatemala is now completed.  All in all, it was a difficult year for Guatemala’s broccoli harvest due to weather issues and a reduced crop. Guatemala is now producing sugar snap peas, snow peas, and Brussel sprouts.

Peru

Mango season in Peru is underway and all indications point to a good season.   The mango season will end mid to late February at which time prices are expected to rise.

Chile

Raspberry season in Chile has been a bit of a struggle due to lack of rain which reduced yields of the first pick.   Second pick, ongoing now, will better determine the market conditions. Chile has also been struggling with the unrest caused by protests against the government which resulted in devaluing its currency.

Europe

Potato yields are reported to be down, however not as low as last season.  Hard soil, results from the dry, hot summer, slowed down harvest progress and potatoes did not bulk up as anticipated which resulted in lower yields.  Storage pipelines were empty when new season began, along with a growing demand from Eastern Europe for fresh potatoes. This will affect the volume of potatoes necessary to fill the factories at capacity.    Harvest movement was slower than usual, particularly in The Netherlands and Belgium in September/October due to excessive rains.

Corn Peas and Beans will also be in tight supply from Europe due to the severe heat and drought over the summer months. Many processors there are out looking to buy these items.

Indonesia

A difficult year for Indonesia’s pineapple crop, as reported by Food News.   Dry season along with a drought May through November has impacted pineapple yields in that country.

Australia

Recent cooler conditions and rain have calmed the fires in Australia, but some are still burning and at least 30 people have died with more than 10 million hectors of bush, forest, parks and agricultural land being destroyed.  Nearly 1/3 of the vines that provide grapes for the wine industry in Adelaide is gone.    In Southeastern Australia sheep and cattle were hurt and many of the dairy farms were affected as well. Kangaroos and koalas were lost to the fires.  Record breaking temperatures along with an extended drought and strong winds were major factors in contributing to this disaster.

China

Zhejiang Province

Lotus root harvest has begun, with peak season ongoing.   Both broccoli and cauliflower are in the transplant stage with harvest of some early fields commencing. Plantings for sugar snap peas and pea pods has begun.

Fujian Province

Water chestnut season is ending a bit early this season and will be winding down in the next week.

Shandong Province

Fall broccoli and cauliflower season now winding down.   Most harvest is now completed in this area and will restart again in March/April.

More cases of Coronavirus as China’s death toll rises.   More than half of China’s breeding pigs have either died or been slaughtered due to the spreading disease.  This will leave a large gap in China’s favorite meat as well as push food prices up while 40 million pig farms will most likely lose their livelihoods.   Pork accounts for more than 60% of Chinese meat consumption.

アメリカ合衆国

太平洋岸北西部の野菜のシーズンは、全体として良好で、特筆すべき大きな問題はありませんでした。ただし、中西部とヨーロッパからの需要があるため、市場は品薄です。

北西部のジャガイモの収穫は、例年より1週間遅れで始まりました。9月末と10月初めの数日間は、秋雨で気温も低い日が続きました。ワシントン州とオレゴン州のシーズンは終了し、量は例年並み、質は良好です。ただし、原材料ジャガイモの今の在庫量では、昨今の需要を満たすだけの生産量を維持できないのではないかという懸念があります。中西部とカナダの加工業者は、今シーズンの不足分を補うため、オレゴン州、ワシントン州、アイダホ州の供給ルートを模索しています。

中西部では、昨シーズンは天候が理想的とは言えず、春から初夏にかけて雨が多く、さまざまな荒天に見舞われました。すべての作物の植え付けが遅々として進みませんでした。中西部のスイートコーンの収穫は、昨年より3週間遅れで終了しました。全体として、中西部の作物の多くが、今年は難しいシーズンとなりました。中西部の加工業者は、グリーンピースとトウモロコシを市場で買い付けていますが、ジャガイモを含むすべての作物が不足しているため、2020年のシーズンまで持ち越せるかどうか、厳しいところでしょう。 

ワシントン州のレッドラズベリーは、収穫が昨年と比べ約12%減となりました。収穫シーズンに雨に見舞われ、ジュース加工用に回された作物が多くなったためです。IQF（個別急速冷凍）加工用のラズベリーは、価格が上がっていて、ほとんどの加工業者で品切れの状態です。これに加え、チリの状況からの影響もあるため、IQFラズベリー市場は底堅くなるでしょう。

カナダ

雨と寒気で、カナダのジャガイモ生産の大半が減速しました。マニトバ州では、11月初めに霜が降りたため、予定よりも早く収穫が終わりました。雨のせいで収穫が遅れていたため、すべて収穫し終わらないうちに霜が降りてしまいました。同州の2件の加工業者が、この影響を受けるでしょう。しかも、アイダホ州から余剰分のジャガイモが入ってきて不足分を補うということも、今シーズンはなさそうです。アイダホ州でも早くに冬の天候が訪れたためです。

メキシコ

ブロッコリーとカリフラワーの生産地が、収穫の最盛期を迎えています。天候は、晴れて暖かな日が続いています。すべての加工業者が生産ラインをフル稼働させていて、量は十分にあり、質も上々です。カリフラワーは、ライスカリフラワーのブームで需要が高まっています。

グアテマラ

グアテマラのブロッコリーのシーズンは終了しました。全体として、今年はブロッコリーの収穫が天候のため不調に終わり、少なめの収穫となりました。グアテマラでは現在、スナップエンドウ、サヤエンドウ、メキャベツが生産されています。

ペルー

ペルーではマンゴーのシーズンが進行中で、良いシーズンになりそうです。マンゴーのシーズンは2月中旬から下旬に終了し、その後は価格が上がる見通しです。

チリ

チリのラズベリーのシーズンは、雨不足の影響を受けて不調が続いています。初摘みの収穫は少なめに終わりました。現在は2番摘みが進行中ですが、この結果次第で市場の状況が決まるでしょう。チリでは、政府に対する抗議活動から政情不安も生じていて、通貨が大幅に下落しています。

ヨーロッパ

ジャガイモの収穫量は下がっているとのことですが、昨シーズンほどではありません。雨不足と猛暑の夏を経て土壌が固くなっていたため、収穫が減速しました。また、ジャガイモが思ったほど大きく実らなかったため、収穫量が減少しました。新しいシーズンが始まった時点で在庫はゼロだったうえ、生鮮ジャガイモに対するヨーロッパ東部からの需要が拡大しています。このため、工場をフル操業するのに必要な量に影響するでしょう。収穫の動きは例年より緩慢で、特にオランダとベルギーは9月から10月にかけての多雨で遅れが生じました。

トウモロコシ、グリーンピース、サヤインゲンも、供給が少なくなる見通しです。ヨーロッパは夏の間に酷暑と日照りで影響を受けたためです。多くの加工業者が、これらの原材料の買い付けを模索しています。

インドネシア

Food Newsによると、インドネシアのパイナップルの収穫は苦戦しています。乾期に加えて5月から11月末まで干ばつが続き、パイナップルの生産量に影響しました。

オーストラリア

気温が下がり雨が降ったおかげで山火事は少し収まりましたが、今もなお続いていて、これまでに30人以上が亡くなりました。潅木・森林地帯や自然公園、農地は1,000万ヘクタール以上が焼失しました。アデレードのワイン業界にブドウを供給している農園では、ブドウの木の3分の1近くが失われました。東南部のヒツジとウシにも被害が出ていて、酪農家の多くに影響が及んでいます。カンガルーとコアラは多くが焼死しました。記録的な暑さと長期にわたる雨不足、それに強風が、この惨事を招いた大きな要因でした。

中国

浙江省

レンコンの収穫が始まり、最盛期が続いています。ブロッコリーとカリフラワーは、植え替えが行われていて、一部で早期の収穫が始まっています。スナップエンドウとサヤエンドウは、植え付けが始まっています。

福建省

今年のシログワイのシーズンは早めに終了しつつあり、あと1週間程度です。

山東省

ブロッコリーとカリフラワーの秋作分の収穫が終わりつつあります。この地域のほとんどの畑は終了していて、3月から4月に再開します。

中国では新型コロナウイルスの感染が引き続き広まっていて、死者も増えています。このウイルスの蔓延により、中国産のブタは半数以上が病死または殺処分となりました。この結果、中国の食卓に欠かせない豚肉が大きく不足し、価格を上昇させる一方で、4,000万軒の養豚農家が生計を失うと見られています。中国では食肉消費の60%以上を豚肉が占めています。

各地の自治体が検疫を実施していて、旧正月の休暇後の帰省や職場復帰にも制限が課されていることから、中国企業との連絡に時間がかかっていて、反応が遅くなっています。
