The latest message from Alison Bodor, CEO of AFFI (the American Frozen Food Institute) provides updates on what’s happening in the FDA including changes that are important to all who produce and sell frozen foods as noted in the following report:

  • FDA Structural Reform: AFFI has been part of a small and diverse coalition of food and consumer groups leading the call for FDA reform.  AFFI is pleased that FDA is beginning to move in the right direction and has announced recent changes, detailed further below.
  • The resumption of regular FDA facility inspections:  FDA Inspections are anticipated to return to pre-covid levels in 2023, particularly after language in the recent Omnibus bill expressed concern with inspection frequency.  AFFI recently launched a new toolkit (read more below) that provides essential step-by-step details of what your business should do during a facility inspection.
  • A focus on nutrition and food labeling policy:  It is anticipated that FDA will continue to drive changes to nutrition and food labeling policies though initiatives such as sodium reduction, Front-of-Pack (FOP) labeling and redefining “healthy.”  In fact, FDA will soon conduct consumer research on FOP nutritional labeling as it pursues the development of a standardized national approach.  Nutrition and labeling are priorities for AFFI and with their Legislative Affairs and Regulatory Affairs Committees, they are providing comments and recommendations to FDA that support the frozen food industry.
  • Ongoing Matters:   AFFI remains focused on FDA’s policy on Listeria Monocytogenes and the FDA’s Enteric Virus Frozen Berry Sampling Assignment and subsequent report.

AFFIs New Toolkit – Regulatory Requirements for Food Labeling and Inspection

The toolkit covers current U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S.D.A. regulations pertaining to labeling, food facility and product inspections and regulatory compliance including such topics as:

  • FDA-accepted claims and the Bioengineered Food Disclosure Requirement
  • What to expect during a USDA or FDA inspection
  • What is required in food safety preventive controls or a HACCP system
  • FDA and FSIS policies on Listeria Monocytongenes
  • A crisis response checklist

If you are a member of AFFI, this toolkit is now available and can be accessed at any time through the AFFI member dashboard at www.affi.org.  This is a must-have resource for frozen food industry personnel who process, pack, hold and distribute food to the U.S. marketplace. If you are not yet a member of AFFI, consider joining today as the benefits to members are well-worth it.
