Crop News, July 2026

United States

Cherries: The Pacific Northwest cherry crop is tracking lighter after cold conditions during bloom, though fruit quality and sizing are still being reported favorably. Oregon reports indicate frost damage reduced recovery during spring, and processed cherry availability may tighten as more fruit is directed to the fresh market.

Michigan tart cherry supply has been sharply reduced by frost damage, with early estimates indicating the crop may be less than half of last season’s volume. Southern and western Michigan are reporting very limited fruit on trees, and many orchards are unlikely to be harvested. Northern Michigan is a different story, with a portion of acreage still showing a viable crop, though overall tart cherry availability is expected to remain constrained as processors manage low carryover inventories and limited new-crop supply.

Potatoes: U.S. potato acreage is expected to contract, with frozen processing acreage relatively stable in the Pacific Northwest but lower in some Midwest processing states. Storage stocks have eased from last year, while frozen processing use has remained active and processors continue to work through quality and recovery issues from the storage crop.

Peas: Pea harvest began slightly ahead of schedule in several processing areas, supported by warmer recent weather. Some early unevenness tied to spring freezes was reported, but recent rains improved conditions in multiple growing regions and all referenced locations are now harvesting.

Sweet Corn: Sweet corn planting continues to progress across processing regions despite scattered rainfall. Early stands are reported in good condition, with a majority of acreage planted and remaining fields generally healthy.

Snap Peas: Rain slowed planting across several growing areas, but operations resumed and organic planting is underway. Processing acreage progress remains partial, with certain varieties already completed.

Tomatoes: California tomato planting is complete, and field conditions remain favorable across the Central Valley. Warm temperatures and stable weather have supported early crop development, with harvest expected to begin in July.

Berries: Watsonville blackberry and raspberry seasons started earlier than usual after warm winter and spring conditions advanced plant development. Raspberry production is at peak, blackberry volume is building, and demand remains active around summer merchandising windows.

Melons: Southwest desert cantaloupe supply has been severely disrupted by warm winter conditions and whitefly-transmitted virus pressure. Shippers reported a short-term supply gap before northern growing regions become more fully available.

Onions: Georgia Vidalia onions are showing strong quality and good pack-out despite early freeze concerns. Broader onion supply is ample from summer producing regions, though freight availability and fuel rates remain a major operational challenge.

Mexico

Mango: Mexican mango supply is tightening during the transition from southern to northern growing regions. Cooler spring conditions reduced flowering in key areas, while more recent heat accelerated maturity in the north, creating an uneven supply pattern into summer.

Grapes: Mexico’s grape season has been compressed by lingering South American supply at the front end and an early California start at the back end. Fruit has accumulated in storage in some channels, creating quality pressure as the season moves toward completion.

Tomatoes: Mexican tomato acreage and production are expected to decline as growers manage antidumping duties, reduced margins, weather issues, and a continued shift toward protected production systems. Some growers are moving away from open-field production due to uncertainty and climate risk.

Papaya: Mexican papaya supply remains ahead of demand, with extremely hot weather and the rainy season influencing growing areas. Demand has softened with school out, while market movement remains uneven.

Peru

Blueberries: Peru’s blueberry sector continues to focus on varietal renewal, with growers replacing older varieties with genetics aimed at improved firmness, shelf life, fruit size, and export condition. El Niño-related uncertainty remains a key watch point for the upcoming season, particularly around early-season availability.

Avocados: Peruvian avocado supply has been a major driver in Europe, where concentrated arrivals created stock buildup and put pressure on market returns. Later-season fruit may face a less crowded market as Peru’s shipment peak moved earlier than expected.

Colombia

Blueberries: Colombia’s blueberry sector continues to expand, with production concentrated in highland growing areas. Most fruit is still consumed domestically, while export development remains tied to phytosanitary access and cold-treatment requirements for North American markets.

Chile

Garlic: Chile’s garlic season ended under pressure from oversupply and competition from imported product in key destination markets. Exporters reported weaker returns and are emphasizing quality improvement rather than volume expansion for the next cycle.

Blueberries: Chilean frozen cultivated blueberry shipments increased across major markets last year, though early-year movement softened into some destinations while exports to parts of Europe continued to grow.

Canada

Wild Blueberries: Canadian wild blueberry development is running at a more normal pace than recent early seasons, with cooler temperatures slowing growth and reducing immediate frost pressure. In the Maritimes, prior drought and heat are still weighing on early yield expectations.

Cranberries: Canadian cranberry development has been delayed by cool, wet spring weather, with slower bud break and field access challenges. Frost risk is lower than last spring, and crop potential remains favorable pending warmer, sunnier conditions.

Haskap Berries: Haskap development is slightly behind normal due to cool spring weather, though the crop continues to show good potential. Pollinator activity has been inconsistent, and moist conditions increased disease monitoring needs.

Costa Rica

Pineapple: The processed pineapple sector is dealing with an imbalance between raw fruit costs and current juice market conditions. Slower not-from-concentrate juice sales have increased inventories, while some processors are redirecting fruit toward concentrate production.

Argentina

Lemons: Argentina’s lemon export activity increased early in the year, supported by fresh lemons, concentrated juice, and essential oil movement. Fresh and processed lemon products continue to move into a broad mix of markets.

Spain

Garlic: Spain’s garlic crop is showing strong agronomic results, with favorable harvest weather supporting quality and sizing. Commercial conditions remain difficult due to pressure from Chinese supply and carryover product in European markets.

Stone Fruits: Spain’s stone fruit season is running ahead of schedule, with abundant European supply and slower demand putting pressure on the market. Larger sizes remain harder to find, while small and medium fruit are more available.

Belgium

Apples and Pears: Hailstorms affected apple and pear orchards in parts of Belgium, with apples more susceptible to lasting skin damage. Pears appear less affected in some orchards, though the full impact will be clearer closer to harvest.

Netherlands

Carrots: The Dutch storage carrot market weakened sharply after a spring peak, with oversupply and competition from cheaper imported carrots reducing returns. Some remaining cold-storage carrots are being diverted to lower-value outlets.

Cabbage: The cabbage market remains under pressure from ample availability and low prices, especially for white cabbage. Growers are managing a divide between clearing lower-quality lots and holding product already placed in storage.

United Kingdom

Cherries: Scottish cherries are developing well, though the crop is lighter than usual after unsettled flowering weather affected pollination and fruit set. Warmer recent weather has advanced crop development and quality is reported favorably so far.

Turkey

Cherries: Turkey’s cherry crop has improved significantly from last season’s frost-affected results, with a later harvest window expected to support continued export activity. Larger crop expectations are being reported alongside strong demand.

New Zealand

Apples: New Zealand apple crop volumes and quality are meeting expectations after two stronger seasons, including ongoing recovery in Hawke’s Bay. Improved weather and steadier labor availability have supported larger crops.

Avocados: New Zealand’s avocado industry is preparing for a larger export season, with Australia expected to take a greater share while Asian and North American programs continue. Weather disruption, shipping volatility, competition, and higher input costs remain active challenges.

Australia

Mango: Mango orchards in Australia’s Northern Territory have been affected by mango twig tip dieback, with tree removals reported in the Greater Darwin region. The disease has reduced flowering and yield potential in affected orchards and remains difficult to manage once established.

Cherries: Tasmania reported a strong cherry export season supported by later harvest timing, favorable fruit quality, and reduced competition in Asian markets. Export activity remained concentrated across major Asian destinations while domestic movement also stayed active.

Philippines

Mango: The Philippines completed its first commercial fresh mango shipment to Canada, adding a new market for Carabao mangoes. The shipment follows efforts to diversify export destinations for Philippine fruit.

Pineapple: The Philippines shipped fresh MD2 pineapples from Mindanao to the UAE, demonstrating compliance with import and phytosanitary requirements. The shipment was completed despite logistical disruption and elevated freight costs.

China

Garlic: Chinese garlic supply continues to pressure multiple global markets, including Europe and Latin America. Several producing regions report that import competition, carryover product, and weaker buyer interest have complicated commercial conditions.

Asparagus: Frozen white asparagus supply remains constrained by reduced availability from Peru and lower yields in mainland China. Frozen green asparagus is steadier, supported by ongoing processing activity in Peru.

Summary

Weather remains the most common driver across crop reports, with frost, hail, heat, rain, and disease affecting cherries, apples, melons, mangoes, and berries in several regions. Timing shifts are also visible, with some seasons running ahead of normal while others have been delayed by cooler spring conditions.

Several processing-related crops are showing mixed supply positions. Potatoes remain active but are being managed against inventory, demand, and recovery concerns. Pineapple juice markets remain imbalanced, while frozen berries and cherries are being shaped by crop size, inventories, and competition from fresh-market channels.

Vegetable markets are also uneven. Peas, corn, beans, tomatoes, and carrots are progressing across North American processing areas, while European carrots, cabbage, and garlic face pressure from oversupply or imports. Freight, energy, labor, packaging, and input costs continue to be reported as operational issues across several categories.

Crop News, July 2026
