Noon International Who’s Buying Berries Unpacking the Demographics of Berry Consumption in 2024

Berries remain a universally beloved snack, but recent data from The Packer’s Fresh Trends 2024 offers a nuanced view of exactly who is buying strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries in the United States. Conducted in mid-October 2023, this survey of over 1,100 consumers reveals fascinating trends in berry purchasing habits across different income and age demographics.

Income and Berry Purchases:

According to the survey, 60% of consumers reported buying fresh strawberries last year, making them the most popular berry, followed by blueberries at 54%, blackberries at 33%, and raspberries at 28%. Notably, higher-income consumers are more likely to purchase berries, with those earning above $100,000 annually showing the highest rates across all berry types. For instance, 68% of this group bought blueberries, compared to only 32% in the under $25,000 income bracket.

Age and Berry Preferences:

Berry purchases also tend to increase with age. The youngest group, aged 18-29, shows the lowest purchase rates for all berries. As age increases, so does the likelihood of buying berries, peaking with consumers aged 60 and older, particularly for strawberries.

Households with Children:

The presence of dependent children in a household generally correlates with higher berry consumption, especially for blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries. Households with two or more children show the highest rates of purchase for these berries.

Geographic Variations:

Geographically, the Northeast U.S. sees the highest purchase rates for blueberries and strawberries, while the West leads for blackberries and raspberries. The Midwest consistently shows lower purchase rates across all berry types.

Ethnicity and Berry Buying:

The data also highlights ethnic variations in berry buying, with White/Caucasian consumers often reporting the highest rates of berry purchases, while Black/African American consumers show the lowest.

Given these diverse trends, it’s clear that berries appeal to a broad spectrum of the American populace, albeit with significant variations based on demographic factors.
