Despite recent stormy weather and elevated temperatures, U.S. crops continue to make steady progress. The recent U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) weekly crop progress report reveals significant advancements in corn and soybean development, indicating a promising outlook for the 2024 harvest season.
Corn silking has reached 41%, surpassing both the 40% rate achieved in 2023 and the five-year average of 32%. This stage is critical as it marks the beginning of the pollination process, which is essential for kernel development. Additionally, 8% of the corn crop has reached the dough stage, ahead of the 6% achieved last year and the five-year average of 4%. This stage signifies the development of the grain, which will eventually mature into harvestable corn.
The USDA report shows that corn conditions remain unchanged week-on-week. Currently, 3% of the crop is rated as very poor and 6% as poor. On the brighter side, 23% is considered fair, 52% labeled as good, and 16% rated as excellent. These ratings provide a comprehensive view of the crop’s health and potential yield.
For soybeans, 51% of the acreage has reached the blooming stage, matching the rate from 2023 and surpassing the five-year average of 44%. Additionally, 18% of soybean acreage is setting pods, slightly above last season’s 17% and the five-year average of 12%. These stages are crucial for the development of soybeans, influencing the final yield.
Soybean conditions have remained stable, with 2% of the crop rated as very poor and 6% as poor. Meanwhile, 24% is considered fair, 56% labeled as good, and 12% rated as excellent. These ratings highlight the crop’s resilience and overall health amidst challenging weather conditions.
The USDA report also provides updates on the winter wheat harvest, which is now 71% complete. This progress is ahead of the 53% completion rate in 2023 and the five-year average of 62%. States like Arkansas and Oklahoma have finished their acreage, while Missouri and Texas are close behind with 97% completion.
