Recently an important food safety meeting, The International Association for Food Protection, was held in Long Beach, California. Members from AFFI’s (American Frozen Food Institute) Government Affairs Team were present to lead discussion of food safety. With other food safety policy leaders.
“AFFI’s collaboration with expert scientists focused on Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), enteric viruses, and root-cause analysis progressed our long-standing views on risk-based, practical approaches and solutions to the most-pressing frozen food industry food safety priorities.”
During these meetings, AFFI members spent time educating various members on the development of the Lm pilot program. This is an important plan that will test the idea that a three-class sampling plan rather than a zero tolerance approach for low-risk foods that do not support the growth of Lm will be more protective of consumer health and safety.
The zero-tolerance approach for Listeria in frozen foods is a stringent food safety policy that mandates the absence of Listeria monocytogenes in any detectable amount in food products. This approach was adopted to prevent foodborne illness caused by listeria, which can survive and proliferate even at low temperatures. Under this policy, frozen foods are subject to rigorous testing and monitoring, and any detection of Listeria leads to immediate corrective actions, such as product recalls and enhanced sanitation measures.
It became apparent during meetings held with policy makers that the FDA is very interested in working with the industry and consumer advocate stakeholder group to drive this pilot program forward. Potential pilot program participants will help refine the pilot program and “ensure engagement from all sectors of low-risk foods that do not support growth industry and technical partners.”
As Alison Bodor, CEO of the American Frozen Food Institute, added about the meeting:
“The Enteric viruses were also an important topic for AFFI at IAFP. Donna Garren spoke on a roundtable discussion on the use of AI in food safety, and highlighted EViews – a risk management tool designed through a partnership with iDecisionSciences to address risks associated with enteric viruses in the frozen berry supply chain. The tool collects baseline and dynamic risk data from farms and processing facilities, utilizing an integrated approach to manage food safety. This new tool will be released in the coming months.”

食品安全性にとって重要な国際食品保護協会（IAFP）の会議が、先日カリフォルニア州ロングビーチで開催されました。米国冷凍食品協会（AFFI）の政府渉外チームのメンバーが参加して、食品安全性についての議論を率いました。食品安全性にかかわる他の政策リーダーも参加していました。
「AFFIは、リステリア・モノサイトゲネス、腸内ウイルス、および根本原因分析を専門とする研究者との協力を通じて、冷凍食品業界にとって最も切迫した食品安全性の優先課題に対するリスクベースの実践的なアプローチと解決策についての以前からの見方を前進させてきました」。
この会議の間にAFFIのメンバーは、リステリア・モノサイトゲネス・パイロット制度の開発についての認知向上を図るため、さまざまなメンバーに働きかけました。これは重要な計画で、リステリア・モノサイトゲネスの成長を促進しない低リスクの食品に対してゼロトレランスのアプローチを取るのではなく、3種のサンプルを検査するほうが消費者の健康と安全の保護にとって効果的だという考え方を試すものです。
冷凍食品のリステリア菌に対するゼロトレランスのアプローチは、きわめて厳密な食品安全性の政策で、検出可能な量のリステリア・モノサイトゲネスが食品にまったく存在しないことを義務付けています。このアプローチは、低温でも殺菌されず増殖するリステリア菌が原因の食中毒を予防するために採用されました。この政策の下では、冷凍食品に対して厳密な試験とモニタリングが行われていて、リステリア菌がわずかでも検出されれば、即座に製品回収や衛生対策の強化といった是正措置が求められます。
政策担当者との会合で明らかになったのは、食品業界および消費者団体と協力してこのパイロット制度を前進させることに対して米国食品医薬品局（FDA）が非常に強い関心を持っていることでした。パイロット制度の参加者は、この制度の改良に寄与するとともに、「低リスク食品のあらゆる業界と技術パートナーによる取り組みを確実に推進する」ことになります。
AFFIのAlison Bodor代表は、この会議について次のように説明しました。
「IAFPでは、腸内ウイルスもAFFIにとって重要なトピックでした。円卓会議のディスカッションに参加したDonna Garren氏は、食品安全性におけるAIの活用について話し、iDecisionSciencesとの協力を通じて設計されたリスク管理ツールのEViewsに触れました。冷凍ベリー類のサプライチェーンにおける腸内ウイルス関連のリスクに対応するツールです。農園と加工処理施設からベースラインとダイナミックなリスクデータを収集して、統合的なアプローチにより食品安全性を管理します。この新しいツールが数カ月以内にリリースされる予定です」。
