Noon International Potato Market 2024 Outlook

The potato market in Northern Europe is experiencing unprecedented fluctuations due to a combination of weather challenges, delayed planting, and shifting international demand. Here are the key insights from the recent developments in the potato market:

Record-High Prices

In Belgium, the prices for the Fontane variety of potatoes, which are widely used in the processing industry, have soared to €600-636 ($644-683) per metric ton. Similarly, in the Netherlands, prices are high, ranging from €600-700/t. These record prices are attributed to several factors, including reduced supply and increased demand.

Late Planting and Uncertainty

The transplanting season in northern Europe has been significantly delayed due to abundant rains, leading to reduced supplies of early potatoes and contributing to price hikes. The planting calendar extended over eight to ten weeks, with some planting still ongoing as recently as last week. Emergence problems are prevalent, with a significant portion of the planted area in Belgium and the Netherlands not sprouting due to rotting tubers.

Impact on Supply

Despite NEPG’s estimates of a 4-6% increase in planted area compared to the previous year’s 583,000 hectares, the late planting has introduced considerable uncertainty into the market. A shortage of seeds persists due to rain or flood damage, particularly in Belgium and the Netherlands. While the seed-cultivated area has increased in France, it has remained stable in the Netherlands.

Export Declines

Exports of frozen potatoes from Belgium and the Netherlands saw significant declines of 17% and 19% year-over-year, respectively, in January-April 2024. France and Germany also experienced drops in frozen potato exports by 9% and 19% year-over-year, respectively. Conversely, some countries have increased their exports: Canada (+8%), India (+89%), mainland China (+19%), and Argentina (+2%). Notably, Turkey doubled its exports from 10,600 metric tons to 22,000 metric tons year-over-year.

Processing Demand

Despite the challenging conditions, processing demand in the NEPG zone is increasing, particularly due to higher processing capacity in France. However, sales of frozen potatoes and other processed products are stabilizing or decreasing due to increased competition from countries like China, India, Turkey, and Argentina.
