In an inspiring move to address food insecurity and promote community health, Dr. Jing Li from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis is leading an innovative project, NutriConnect. This study explores the concept of “prescriptions for fruits and vegetables,” aiming to help residents of the St. Louis Metro area access discounted produce and improve their overall health.

What is NutriConnect?

NutriConnect is a unique project designed to tackle the pressing issues of food insecurity and food deserts in the St. Louis Metro area. By collaborating with BJC HealthCare and Schnucks Markets, the initiative will provide participants with bi-weekly access to fruits and vegetables. This approach is expected to encourage healthy eating habits, enhance community health, and address the underlying causes of chronic diseases.

The Two Approaches

NutriConnect will compare two distinct methods of delivering fruits and vegetables to participants:

1. Coupon-Based Approach: Participants will receive bi-weekly coupons to purchase items selected by a dietitian from Schnucks Markets. This approach empowers individuals to choose the foods they prefer, promoting a sense of autonomy and personal preference in their dietary choices.

2. Home Delivery Approach: Participants will receive bi-weekly deliveries of preselected fruits and vegetables, which include a mix of fresh, frozen, and canned options. This method ensures that participants receive a balanced and varied diet, even if they are unable to visit a grocery store.

Both groups will also benefit from educational resources, including nutrition tips and recipes, to help them make the most of the fruits and vegetables they receive.

The Importance of Healthy Eating

Dr. Jing Li emphasizes the critical role of diet in overall health. “What you eat can have a tangible impact on your overall health,” she says. “Food insecurity can contribute to the development of chronic conditions, so access to healthy food — particularly fruits and vegetables — can be a powerful tool for preventing, managing, and treating diseases.”

The project aims to break down barriers to healthy food access, particularly in low-income neighborhoods that are far from grocery stores. These areas, known as food deserts, often leave residents with limited options for nutritious food, increasing their risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions.

Community Collaboration

The success of NutriConnect relies heavily on community collaboration. Washington University, BJC HealthCare, and Schnucks Markets are working together to make healthy food more accessible. Social workers at Barnes-Jewish Hospital will administer questionnaires to determine participants’ eligibility based on social, financial, and medical criteria.

Allison Primo, a registered dietitian and the health and wellness strategy manager at Schnuck Markets, highlights the long-term goals of the project: “We are hopeful that the incentives and strategies will encourage individuals to make healthy food choices and create sustainable, long-term habits. By providing individuals with access to produce, the study not only addresses immediate nutritional needs but also contributes to the long-term well-being of the people in our community.”

NutriConnect represents a promising step forward in addressing food insecurity and promoting healthier lifestyles in St. Louis. By prescribing fruits and vegetables, Dr. Jing Li and her team hope to foster a community where access to nutritious food is a given, not a privilege. As the study progresses, it holds the potential to transform healthcare and nutrition, paving the way for a healthier, more resilient community.
