New Era of Smarter Food Safety Uses Tech-Enabled Traceability

FDA’s New Era of Smarter Food Safety Four Core Elements

Just as companies such as Yum! Brands, Inc and others are using technology to improve and advance their businesses, the FDA’s new approach to food safety, known as the New Era of Smarter Food Safety leverages technology and other tools to create a safer, more digital traceable food system.

Efforts to enhance traceability, respond more quickly to outbreaks, reduce contamination in food with resulting illnesses and expand awareness of stronger food measures can be found in the New Era of Smarter Food Safety Blueprint (/food/new-era-smarter-food-safety-blueprint.

There are four priority areas in the blueprint as follows in the New Era of Smarter Food Safety Blueprint

Core Element 1 is Tech-Enabled Traceability.  The current global food system is not only complex but rapidly changing as new products, production methods and supply sources are developed.  It is therefore critical to protect all consumers from contaminated products by being able to identify their source quickly and remove them from all areas of sale in the marketplace.

“The ultimate goal in the New Era is to have end-to-end traceability throughout the food system, with firms voluntarily adopting tracing technologies. Harmonizing tracing activities to support interoperability is a priority, as is finding solutions that are achievable for companies of all sizes. This is a priority outlined in the FDA Food Modernization Act and the New Era of Smarter Food Safety.”

To this end, the FDA has issued a final rule on food traceability designed to facilitate faster identification and rapid removal  of potentially contaminated food from the market, resulting in fewer foodborne illnesses and/or deaths.  Complete information can be found at FSMA Final Rule for Requirements for Additional Traceability Records for Certain Foods.
