Green pea and potato planting still underway. Corn plantings are just beginning. Securing enough contracted acreage has been a struggle as growers have many other more profitable options to consider and processors are paying more to the growers this year. Most processors are planning on same volumes as last season or even a little less.

Grower contracts are placed for potatoes, peas and corn and we have heard grower prices are up between 30% to 40% in the Northwest. Higher grower prices, higher fertilizer prices, higher energy costs, increased transportation costs and lack of labor, are pointing to a .10/lb. to .15/lb. rise in prices this coming season. With the recent developments in Ukraine and gas prices rising we are seeing increases in our food prices worldwide.

Grower contracts in the Colombia Basin for 2022 season potatoes are completed with the increase in volume focused on early variety potatoes. Input costs for the 2021 season were up by about 15% to 20%. 2022 will bring costs up another 18% to 22%. The 2022 potato crop will be the most expensive potato crop ever planted due to grower concerns about rising costs.

Raw product supplies could fall short this coming season due to the high demand both domestically and abroad for French fries and all types of processed potatoes. As well growers may choose not to grow as much due to the continually rising costs.

Current potato processing is ongoing using storage potatoes. Potatoes from the state of Maine have been flowing into the Northwest to keep NW processors running, however the last of these potatoes have arrived. Most processors believe they now have enough potatoes to make it until the new season commences.

Onion yields are down 20% – 40% in Oregon and Idaho this season due to the unusual higher heat. While the quality is reported as average the onions did not size up due to the heat, causing reduction in yields. U.S. suppliers are sold out.

Fruit growers in the Pacific Northwest (Oregon and Washington) are reporting Raspberry yields off by 30% to 50%. Blackberry yields may be down by 80%. Raspberry crumble volumes are limited due to the smaller size of the crop and also the smaller size of the fruit which reduces the crumbling.

Blueberry crop will be reduced by 20% to 40% depending on the area and grower. All in all, the berry crops in the PNW have been hit hard by the heat and the frozen berry market remains very firm moving forward. Contracts will most likely be prorated and prices increased.

Severe flooding in November and freeze in December may affect the outcome of the upcoming 2022 season in the Pacific Northwest. Flood losses in Whatcom county will result in an estimated 50 Million dollars in overall damages.

While in British Columbia, Canada approximately 1000 acres of blueberry fields flooded. Severely impacted growers may need to pull out their plants and replant which will be a large financial expense as well as put pressure on the industry in general. The past few years have been difficult for British Columbia growers with unpredictable weather events and pollination challenges which have resulted in less blueberry yields.

Cherries which are already short in Michigan due to frost and freeze conditions in April/May, are also short in the Pacific Northwest growing areas due to the heat. The high heat stopped the cherries from reaching their full size as well as causing cherries at the top of the trees to shrivel.

U.S. cranberry production is reduced this year due to heavy rains in August and September and lower than expected volumes produced in Wisconsin and Massachusetts.

Prices for all berry fruits worldwide are up and expected to continue to rise due to low inventories coming into the new season and smaller crops this season globally. Covid is still an issue with labor difficult to find and labor costs continuing to rise.

Wild Blueberry crop in Quebec area was affected by adverse weather conditions and the crop there is projected to be reduced by approximately 50% for conventional and 85% for organic product.

Quebec, Canada’s cranberry production is estimated to be 25% to 30% lower than average due to a cold spring which hindered the crop development.

Mexico

New season broccoli and cauliflower are underway. It was a very rainy summer season in Mexico causing lots of mold, undesirable quality, and low yields to both broccoli and cauliflower. The excess rain also hindered new season plantings which resulted in a late start to the new season. Cooler weather has also slowed the crop. Processors are now catching up and producing at close to capacity levels and are more comfortable to offer product.

Pepper season is ongoing in Mexico with cool weather and a slow start to the season.

Mexico’s mango season is underway and will run through May. Both Tommy and Kent varieties are available.

Fertilizer and labor costs are up. The Mexican government implemented a mandatory minimum wage increase of 22% effective January 1, 2022. This along with much higher fertilizer costs and previous tight inventories have forced all Mexican suppliers to increase prices going into 2022.

Guatemala

Cooler weather affected yields for both snow peas and sugar snap peas this season in Guatemala. Mango season is commencing this month.

Chile

Chile continues to struggle with all fruit and vegetable crops due to recent drought issues and water shortages. Some factories are only running at 75% to 80% capacity. Temperatures are warm and manual labor has been difficult to come by. With few mechanical harvesters available it has proven to be a difficult berry season. Raspberries especially are in tight supply.

Colombia

Heavy rains impacted the mango season and lower volumes are expected. Mango season is now underway. Avocado season will finish up in April. Yields and quality have been reported as good.

Peru

Frozen Mango exports are up by approximately 10% due to the favorable season this year. The main importers are the Netherlands, U.S.A. and Canada.

Avocado season is commencing this month with most growers expanding acreage. Asparagus season is underway as Peru produces mostly year-round. Season is going well, and Noon has both organic and conventional available.

Europe

Green peas and beans still remain short in Europe with no relief in sight. Heavy rain and hail hit most of Europe and crops (peas, corn, beans) struggled as fields were too wet to harvest. Both Belgium and the Netherlands had difficulties with producing their crops this past season. Raspberries in short supply ex Serbia due to heat and rain during the 2021 season. Demand is high as well.

North Western Europe had one of its most humid summers in the last decade. Some areas of Belgium and Western Germany experienced historic high rainfall. Lower yields caused by blight, hollow hearts, and cracks hindered Europe’s 2021 potato crop.

Hungary: Due to very strong European retail demand the price for raw material sweet corn used for canning and freezing has gone up by 50%. Some say as high as 60%. There has also been an acreage reduction of 20%, due primarily to growers having other crops to grow which command higher prices with less input costs. These factors will increase prices for canned and frozen corn coming out of Hungary. Price increases could be as high as 50% for canned corn, especially considering the increased cost for tin plate of almost 50% higher compared to last year.

Predications mention that European growers could reduce their potato acreage in 2022. High costs for fuel, fertilizer, chemicals and labor are encouraging growers to plant other crops which benefit from less capital and lower risk. Some of the strongest grain prices in years is enticing growers to switch from potatoes to grains.

China

Prices for Strawberries out of the Sichuan China region have almost tripled due to the cold weather there and a reduced crop.

Overall adverse weather in Northern China during sowing and harvest led to quality issues and high crop losses of various vegetables. China’s largest vegetable growing province, Shandong, reported large losses due to heavy rainfall and flooded fields. This along with logistic struggles has exerted upward pressure on prices coming out of China.

Based on information from the National Bureau of Statistics, China now ranks as the world’s largest producer and consumer of strawberries. China’s strawberry market is dominated by domestic demand, with consumers appreciating the high nutritional value of strawberries, however the export scale in recent years has also continued to rise with a 5.6% growth rate for fresh strawberries.

In addition, based on information from the International Blueberry Organization in 2019 China surpassed the United States as the world’s largest producer of blueberries. The cultivation of blueberries in China only began in 2000, however the speed of development has been very fast.
