Burger King’s 0% Beef Impossible Whopper

What was once considered a fad is here to stay.  Enter a Burger King franchise and enjoy the Impossible Burger or try a Beyond Meat patty at McDonald’s. Consumers can now find plant-based meat alternatives in their favorite grocery store or fast-food chain. Burger King just introduced the “Impossible Whopper” in Ontario, Canada on March 22, 2021 (after a very successful roll-out in the USA) and will offer it throughout Canada beginning April 2021. The attraction is the taste and the fact that “the product contains no animal ingredients at all. It is made of soy protein, potato protein, coconut oil, sunflower oil and heme. The heme ingredient contributes to the characteristic color, taste and aroma of real meat.”  The consumer can enjoy a burger that is juicy and delicious and tastes like real meat.

Plant-based milk alternatives

And it’s not just the meat category of plant-based foods that is growing.  One of the largest categories to expand is plant-based milk reaching $2.0 billion in sales in 2019.  Milk alternatives are purchased by 41% or 53 million households and account for 14% of all dollar sales of milk. In the past few years plant-based food has also expanded into meals, ice cream, yogurt, butter cheese and tofu/tempeh, beverages, condiments, dressings, mayonnaise, eggs and more is coming.

That’s why the jump in sales of plant-based products from 3.9 billion in 2017 to $5 billion in 2019 is no surprise and why this category of products continues to grow.

Starbucks Impossible Breakfast Sandwich

If it’s a cup of coffee that you’re after, no worries here.  Starbucks offers several choices of plant-based items like Cold Brew with Cinnamon Almond Milk, or Cold Brew with Dark Cocoa Almond Milk or Cinnamon Oat Milk Foam to name a few.  YUM!  And not to be outdone by competitors, they’re also serving various plant-based breakfast items like an impossible Sausage patty that comes with a cage-free egg and aged cheddar cheese served on ciabatta bread.  Definitely a move by Starbucks to satisfy the vegetarian or flexitarian consumer.

Flexitarian Diet infographic via Menus of Change

Twenty-nine percent of U.S. grocery shoppers are now reducing meat and dairy consumption and these folks are known as “flexitarians.”  This word is a combination of “flexible” and vegetarian” and that is exactly what the flexitarian diet is all about.  It’s a way of eating that favors mostly plant-based foods while allowing other meat and animal products in moderation.  Only 4 percent of U.S. consumers are pure vegetarian and 2% are vegan.  But flexitarian now commands 29% of the market making this group a logical target for growth in plant-based food products.

Menus of Change
