Sweet corn harvest is approximately 85% completed in the Pacific Northwest. The weather has cooled off with day time temperatures in the mid 60-degree F range. Nights are certainly cooler and the last few nights have been in the range of 32 – 35 Degrees F. There has been no frost reported yet, but if temperatures continue to be cool we may have cause for concern. Quality and yield are good and expected finish for the season is in a few more weeks.
Potatoes in the Northwest began about a week later than usual and now wet and cool weather could further delay and hurt yields. During the last days of September, a cold front slammed Idaho with winter weather including snow. Yields will most surely be affected but to what extend we do not know as yet.
Weather in the Midwest area has not been ideal with much rain and various storms in spring and early summer. Plantings on all crops there were slow and delayed. The green pea harvest is short with processors in the Midwest on the search for green peas.
Sweet corn is also under stress from rain and then excessive heat. The recent cooler weather in August has slowed down growth with processors behind in their production, however September weather showed improvement. Production for most processors has been slow due to planting gaps and we expect below budget yields. However, reports are showing that quality is very good.
Canada
Rains and cold weather has slowed down much of the Canadian potato crop. Some processors are concerned that growers will leave some fields in the ground or quality will be affected. Another factor will be if Canada comes up short, it could be difficult to purchase raw potatoes from the U.S.A. as growers there are also struggling with earlier than usual cold weather and possible frost.
Mexico
Broccoli and Cauliflower growing regions should be coming out of their rainy season with the forward forecaste calling for sun and warm temperatures. Transplantations have been ramping up in an effort to be in peak production during the very busy holiday season November / December.
Guatemala
Peak Broccoli season now on going with yields and quality very good
Costa Rica
Currently it is low season for pineapple. In addition, weather conditions and high demand for fresh market has caused a lower volume going to the freezers there.
Europe
Potato yields are reported to be down, however not as low as last season. Hard soil, results from the dry, hot summer, has slowed down harvest progress and another factor are that potatoes have not bulked up as anticipated which means lower yields. Storage pipelines were empty when new season began, along with a growing demand from Eastern Europe for fresh potatoes will affect the volume of potatoes necessary to fill the factories at capacity.
Corn and Peas will also be in tight supply from Europe due to the severe heat and drought over the summer months.
Serbia
Raspberry crop is 70% to 80% reduced due to poor weather (snow, hail and rain) and also some of the crop has been hit with disease.
Thailand
Reported by Food news, Thailand’s raw material supply for can sweet corn is expected to be reduced by 20% – 30% due to the drought effects of the El Nino phenomenon. Peak season corn, April to September was impacted due to lack of rain which reduced corn yields. Dry weather is expected again commencing October which will impact other crops in Thailand. Thailand’s sweet corn prices are expected to rise.
China
Zhejiang Province
Lotus root harvest has begun, with peak season later this month. Both broccoli and cauliflower are in the transplant stage.
Fujian Province
Okra season winding down. Autumn crop edamame season has begun.
Shandong Province
Edamame processing is finished. Season went well with good quality.
アメリカ合衆国
太平洋岸北西部ではスイートコーンの収穫が85%ほど終了しました。すっかり涼しくなり、日中の気温は18℃前後です。夜はさらに涼しく、この2、3日は0～2℃ぐらいまで冷え込みました。今のところ霜が降りたという話は聞いていませんが、このまま涼しい日が続くのであれば懸念が生じるかもしれません。作物の質と量は良好で、シーズンはあと数週間で完了する見通しです。
北西部のジャガイモの収穫は、例年より約1週間遅れで始まりました。今は雨が降っていて気温も低いため、さらに遅れが生じて収穫量に影響する可能性があります。9月末の数日間はアイダホ州に寒波が到来し、雪まで降る冬のお天気となりました。収穫に影響することはほぼ間違いありませんが、その程度はまた分かっていません。
中西部では天候が理想的とは言えず、春から初夏にかけて雨が多く、さまざまな荒天に見舞われました。すべての作物の植え付けが遅々として進みませんでした。グリーンピースの収穫は短期で終わったため、中西部の加工業者はグリーンピースの原材料を求めています。
スイートコーンも、雨に続く猛暑で影響を受けています。8月に気温が下がり、生育が減速したため、加工業者は生産スケジュールに遅れを来たしましたが、9月になって天候は回復しました。ほとんどの加工業者が、植え付け期の遅れを受けて生産も停滞気味ですので、予算を下回ることが予想されます。とはいえ、品質は非常に良好とのことです。
カナダ
カナダのジャガイモも、多くの場所で雨と寒気による影響を受けて生産が減速しています。一部の加工業者は、作物が収穫されないまま畑に残され、品質にも影響が及ぶのではないかと懸念しています。カナダの生産量が下がれば、米国から原材料ジャガイモを買い付けるのも難しくなるでしょう。米国の生産者も、例年より早く気温が下がり、霜の恐れが生じて苦戦しているからです。
メキシコ
ブロッコリーとカリフラワーの生産地では、まもなく雨期が終了します。今後の天候は晴れて暖かくなるとの予報です。現在、畑では、11月から12月の繁忙期に生産の最盛期をぶつけるための植え替えが加速しつつあります。
グアテマラ
今はブロッコリーの最盛期です。質・量ともに非常に良好です。
コスタリカ
パイナップルは、今は少なめの時期です。天候に加えて生鮮市場からの需要があるため、冷凍用の作物が減っています。
ヨーロッパ
ジャガイモの収穫量は下がっているとのことですが、昨シーズンほどではありません。雨不足と猛暑の夏を経て土壌が固くなっていたため、収穫が減速しています。また、ジャガイモが思ったほど大きくならなかったため、収穫量が下がる見通しです。新しいシーズンが始まった時点で在庫はゼロだったうえ、生鮮ジャガイモに対するヨーロッパ東部からの需要が拡大しているため、工場をフル操業するのに必要な量に影響するでしょう。
トウモロコシとグリーンピースも、供給が少なくなる見通しです。ヨーロッパは夏の間に酷暑と日照りで影響を受けたためです。
セルビア
ラズベリーの収穫が70～80%減となっています。悪天候（雪、雹、雨）に見舞われたうえ、一部では疫病の被害が出ました。
タイ
Foodnewsによると、タイ産の缶詰用スイートコーンの原材料が20～30%減になると予想されています。エルニーニョによる雨不足の影響です。トウモロコシの最盛期は4月から9月ですが、雨不足の影響を受け、収穫量が減りました。10月以降も乾燥した天候が続くという予報のため、タイ産の他の作物にも影響するでしょう。タイのスイートコーンの価格は上がる見通しです。
中国

レンコンの収穫が始まりました。今月後半が最盛期です。ブロッコリーとカリフラワーは、植え替えが行われています。
福建省
オクラのシーズンは終わりつつあります。秋作のエダマメのシーズンが始まっています。
山東省
エダマメの加工は終了しました。質が良く上々のシーズンでした。
