Green Pea plantings should be coming to completion sometime this month.  Even though plantings got off to a late start weather has been favorable and the crop is coming along well.   Most processors should start production of peas by middle June which is later than usual due to the late start of plantings. Pea production is expected to be fast and furious, and we can expect a tight and firm pea market for 2019.  Reduced acres and possible future weather conditions will most likely contribute to yield outcome.   A few processors have begun to plant sweet corn and the season should begin, weather cooperationg, by first week of August.  It has been difficult for most processors to secure acreage this season due to competition with more profitable crops and some except reduction in corn production by approximately 15% to 20%.

We are hearing to expect Northwest vegetable prices to be up by about .03/lb. to .05/lb. this season.

Potatoes in the Pacific Northwest are mostly in the ground.    Wet weather in the beginning of April slowed plantings down so there may be a few growers still planting.  However, weather has been good and idea for potato growing.   Early variety potatoes are already  emerging.  Demand for frozen potato products domestically is continuing to increase with a projected growth of 2.1% this coming year.   More capacity coming on line in the states of Washington and Idaho.

Spring weather in the Midwest area has not been ideal with much rain and various storms.  Plantings on potatoes have begun but it is going very slow due to the wet weather.

Prices for frozen celery have increased dramatically with product nearly nonexistent.  Rains in September and October caused reduced yields in the Midwest area while the East Coast growing regions suffered the same in January and February.   California’s new season will begin in June; however, it could be a short crop due to reduced yields caused by rains in spring.   California has been depleted of inventory since January.  All in all, it is a very short celery market.

California peak avocado season will be underway May/June/July.  High quality is expected this season; however, yields will be low due to the California fires and high temperatures last summer.   Current rains though will help with fruit size and quality.  The rains are also good for tree health which will help with a stronger crop next season.

Mexico

Mexico still seems to be struggling with production of broccoli and cauliflower.   While we have been optimistic, it is still not a perfect situation for all processors in Mexico.   A freeze in December caused yields in January and February to be low.  Product is coming into the factory, however still not at levels to build up inventories.   Some factories have been running at half capacity.   There has also been some pull from the fresh market.  Prices are firm, demand is high, and there is really no excess product in inventory.

Strawberry season underway in Mexico.   Crop is expected to come in about 20 – 25% short due to continued rains in Sept/Oct/Nov which flooded fields and caused damage to the plants.  The season got off to a late start by about 2 weeks and all indications are that Mexican processors will be tight on strawberries this season. Harvesting is expected to run through May.

Guatemala

Sugar snap peas season is now underway, and season is going well.  Okra, melon and mango will be produced through most of May.  Guatemala’s broccoli season is completed.   New crop broccoli season will begin in July.

Peru

Mango season is now completed.   Freezing of avocado will begin this month and most contracts are settled.

Chile

Sweet Corn and green bean processing completed in Chile.  I.Q.F. seedless grapes are being processed and should finish up in the next week.   Programs for kiwi are being finalized and production should begin this month and run into June.

Europe

Processing Potatoes:  Prices expected to rise again for European processing potatoes.   Due to the poor growing season last summer there is low inventory, including low seed inventory for plantings this season.  Raw product stocks are down in all potato growing countries in Europe, with the largest decline in Belgium.  Even with a decline in seed production last season, growers are expected to plant approximately 2% more acreage compared to last season.  Ground water was depleted last season and in some areas they are still facing issues with water supply.

China

Zhejiang Province

Edamame planting has begun, and harvest season expected to commence early July and will go through September.  Sugar snap peas now available and prices are reasonable.

Fujian Province

Green Bean harvesting now underway.

Shandong Province

Asparagus harvest and processing is now in progress and expected to go through early June.
