Northwest green pea harvest is in full swing! To date weather has been favorable and the crop is expected to progress well. Yields and quality are good.

Sweet corn plantings are pretty much completed in the Northwest. To date the crop conditions look good and everyone is expecting high yields and nice quality. Most processors have planted about the same corn acreage as last season however, with some changes in the percentage of super sweet to regular.  The harvest is expected to commence at the end of this month.

The potato crop in the Colombia Basin/PNW is emerging. Weather has been favorable and with continued good weather the potato season is expected to begin this month. All grower contracts are completed and it seems that Colombia Basin growers received a 5% increase this season.

Oregon raspberry harvest is underway. Blackberries have started this week.    Fruit quality is good.

Western Washington raspberries are in full swing. Blueberries will commence end July and some recent hot days has moved the crop along nicely. There are reports of a good season for both raspberries and blueberries with nice size and yields.

Eastern Washington blueberry crop is underway and due to favorable weather conditions yields and quality are being reported as good.

Cherry Crop in the Northwest will begin this month and weather conditions have been normal for a favorable crop.

All in all the absence of a spring frost was favorable for the berry crop in the Northwest.

Midwest peas now being harvested. Recent rains has slowed down the harvest a bit.

Midwest corn in some areas is 100% planted while other areas are almost completed. Rains have slowed down the plantings due to wet fields, however it is reported that expectations are for a good crop which should start at the end of July.

Market Conditions for U.S. vegetables

While crops are progressing nicely what we have heard from all processors this season is there will be considerable cost increases on frozen vegetables.

The primary reasons are: 

• Current FSMA regulations which have resulted in a high cost to processors to improve sanitation methods and testing procedures to ensure compliance with FSMA
• Labor costs are up due to current low unemployment. Competing jobs at higher wages are making it difficult to find labor.   Especially in the state of Washington and Oregon where rural areas have to compete with high tech jobs in surrounding city areas.  We have heard labor has risen between 15% – 20%.
• Packaging costs have risen approximately 7%
• Seed costs are up by about 5%.
• Transportation costs are at an all-time high.  Truck rates, ocean rates and fuel rates are up between 6 – 8%.

Canada

Heavy frost which hit some of Canada’s Wild Blueberry regions will result in damage to that crop. The series of frost hit at peak blooming stage.

Mexico

The broccoli and cauliflower season in the Bajio region of Mexico has now ended and the planting/growing ban is in place. Processors are now pulling product from the Northern higher elevations in Guanajuato and Puebla where good volume and quality are expected until the rainy season hits in July.

Cost increases, very poor agricultural results during the last year, as well as a stronger than expected peso has resulted in higher prices coming out of Mexico. Most Mexican processors are delivering on time and most have enough inventory built up to cover any gaps through the difficult rainy season.

Guatemala

New Season Broccoli has commenced.

Europe

Serbia’s raspberry season has been hit with rain and hail. Season is underway however loses are expected and fruit quality has been compromised .

China

Temperatures are rising in most areas of China as Zhejiang and Fujian province have entered the rainy season.

Zhejiang Province

Edamame harvest underway with good quality, however yields are a bit lower than last season. Prices are expected to increase due to the high demand in the domestic market.

Green Bean season is completed. There was a 30% to 40% decline in plantings this season due to low profits for growers. As a result, based on 40 % lower yields prices are high.

Fujian Province

Edamame season is underway, however there have been issues with pests so many of the factories are securing raw material from other areas such as Zhejiang.

Lychee production will start this month.   A bumper crop is expected for lychee with excellent quality.

Shandong Province

Onion season is underway. Yields increased this season , however low demand in both the domestic and international market have brought prices down.

アメリカ合衆国

北西部のグリーンピースの収穫は今が真っ盛りです！ これまでのところ天候に恵まれていて、順調に進行する見通しです。質・量ともに上々です。

スイートコーンは、北西部では植え付けがほぼ完了しました。これまでのところ順調に進んでいて、高品質の豊作が期待されています。ほとんどの加工業者で、トウモロコシの作付面積は昨年並みとなりました。ただし、スーパースイートからレギュラーの割合にいくらか変化が見られます。収穫は今月末に開始されるでしょう。

太平洋岸北西部のコロンビア盆地のジャガイモは、発芽しています。天候に恵まれていて、この状態が続けば、今月にはジャガイモのシーズンが始まるでしょう。すべての生産者契約が完了済みで、コロンビア盆地の生産者は今年5%の値上げを受けたと思われます。

オレゴン州のラズベリーとブルーベリーは収穫中です。ブラックベリーも今週から開始されました。果実の品質は良好です。

ワシントン州西部のラズベリーは最盛期を迎えています。ブルーベリーは7月末の開始予定です。最近の暑さで成長が加速しました。ラズベリーもブルーベリーも、今シーズンは大きな実がたくさんついているとのことです。

ワシントン州東部ではブルーベリーの収穫が行われています。天候に恵まれて質・量ともに良好と伝えられています。

北西部のチェリーは、今月から収穫が開始されるでしょう。これまでのところ天候に恵まれています。

北西部は春霜がなかったため、すべてのベリー類が順調に進んでいます。

中西部では現在、グリーンピースが収穫されています。ただし、最近の雨でペースが少し落ちました。

中西部のトウモロコシは、植え付けが100%完了した地域があり、残りの地域もほぼ完了です。雨で畑が濡れ、植え付けのペースが鈍りましたが、良い収穫が期待されているとのことです。収穫は7月終わりにも始まるでしょう。

米国の野菜市場の状況

収穫が順調に進んでいる一方で、すべての加工業者から聞こえてくるのが、今シーズンは冷凍野菜のコストがかなり上がるという話です。

これには次のような理由があります。

• 食品安全強化法（FSMA）の導入を受けて、加工業者がコンプライアンスのために実践しなければならない衛生管理や試験の手順が追加されたため、そのコストがかかっている。
• 失業率の低下とともに人件費が上がっている。競合する高賃金の求人が出ているため、労働力の確保が難しく、特にワシントン州では、農業地域が周辺を取り囲む都市部のハイテク業界の雇用と競わなければならなくなっている。
• 梱包資材費が約7%上昇した。
• 種子価格が約5%上昇した。
• 輸送コストも史上最高レベルに達している。トラックと船舶の料金、それに燃料費がいずれも6～8%上がっている。

カナダ

カナダでは、天然ブルーベリーの産地の一部が霜に見舞われました。作物に被害が出るでしょう。この一連の霜は、開花の最盛期と重なりました。

メキシコ

バヒオ地方のブロッコリーとカリフラワーのシーズンは終了し、現在は植え付けと栽培の禁止期間となっています。加工業者は、グアナファト州とプエブラ州の北部の高地から原材料を調達しています。これらの地域では、7月に雨期が始まるまでは良好な量と質が見込めるためです。

メキシコでは昨シーズンが著しい不作だったうえ、コストが上がっていて、外国為替も予想以上にペソ高となっているため、作物の価格が上がっています。ただし、メキシコの加工業者のほとんどは、納期どおりに出荷していて、困難な雨期を乗り切るだけの十分な在庫も有しています。

グアテマラ

ブロッコリーの新たなシーズンが始まっています。

ヨーロッパ

セルビアのラズベリーは、雨と雹に見舞われました。シーズンは進行中ですが、被害が出る見通しで、品質に影響が及んでいます。

中国

ほとんどの地域で気温が上昇していて、浙江省と福建省は雨期に入りました。

浙江省

エダマメの収穫が行われていて、品質は良好ですが、量は昨シーズンよりわずかに減っています。国内市場の需要が堅調なため、価格は上がる見通しです。

サヤインゲンのシーズンは終了しました。今シーズンは作付面積が30～40%減となりました。生産者の利益が縮小していることが原因です。この結果、収穫量が40%減となり、価格が高騰しています。

福建省

エダマメのシーズンが進行中ですが、害虫の被害が出たため、多くの工場が浙江省など他の地域から原材料を調達しています。

ライチの生産は今月から始まります。すばらしい品質の豊作が期待されています。

山東省

タマネギのシーズンが進行中です。今シーズンは収穫量が増えましたが、国内・国外ともに需要が下がったため、価格も下がっています。
