Green Pea plantings are finally underway!  Plantings began, depending on the area, between March 18 and March 25th.   It is the latest start to pea planting in recent memory for the Pacific Northwest region.    The frequent bouts of snow, rain and extreme cold prevented on schedule pea plantings.  Many growers would not contract due to fear that it was too late to plant peas and decided to plant other more profitable crops.   As well, some suppliers opted to reduce acres knowing that they would not have enough line time to run all of the acres through their factories at the same time or before corn begins.  (we have heard that corn plantings should commence in the next week or two) In addition there are some growers who double crop peas and then corn.  It will be a very interesting and challenging season.  Pea production will be fast and furious, and we can expect a tight and firm pea market for 2019.  Future weather conditions may or may not contribute to yield outcome.

Potato plantings have been delayed by 4 weeks with plantings starting last week.  Normally potato plantings begin end February / early March however, again, due to snow and ground freeze it is a very late start to this season’s plantings.   The startup has been slow, and it will take more time for farmers to catch up on their plantings.  The cooler soil temperature could slow emergence as well.   With that said demand for frozen potato products domestically is continuing to increase with a projected growth of 2.1% this coming year.   More capacity coming on line in the states of Washington and Idaho.

There have been weather issues everywhere this winter and spring throughout the entire U.S.A. with rain and flooding in the Midwest areas which will result in delayed plantings as well.

Prices for frozen celery have increased dramatically with product nearly nonexistent.  Rains in September and October caused reduced yields in the Midwest area while the East Coast growing regions suffered the same in January and February.   California’s new season will begin in June; however, it could be a short crop due to reduced yields caused by rains in spring.   California has been depleted of inventory since January.  All in all, it is a very short celery market.

California peak avocado season will be underway May/June/July.  High quality is expected this season; however, yields will be low due to the California fires and high temperatures last summer.   Current rains though will help with fruit size and quality.  The rains are also good for tree health which will help with a stronger crop next season.

Mexico

Mexico still seems to be struggling with production of broccoli and cauliflower.   While we have been optimistic, it is still not a perfect situation for all processors in Mexico.   A freeze in December caused yields in January and February to be low.  Product is coming into the factory, however still not at levels to build up inventories.   Some factories have been running at half capacity.   There has also been some pull from the fresh market.  Prices are firm, demand is high, and there is really no excess product in inventory.

Preparing Broccoli Seedlings For Planting

Strawberry season underway in Mexico.   Crop is expected to come in about 20 – 25% short due to continued rains in Sept/Oct/Nov which flooded fields and caused damage to the plants.  The season got off to a late start by about 2 weeks and all indications are that Mexican processors will be tight on strawberries this season. Harvesting is expected to run through May.

Guatemala

Sugar snap peas season is now underway, and season is going well.  Guatemala’s broccoli season is completed.   New crop broccoli season will begin in July.

Ecuador

Recent rains in Ecuador has caused some yellowing of the broccoli being harvested there.

Europe

Processing Potatoes:  Prices expected to rise again for European processing potatoes.   Due to the poor growing season last summer there is low inventory, including low seed inventory for plantings this season.

Japan

Reported by Food News recently, Japanese consumption of frozen vegetables has grown steadily in the last four years to 556,000 tons in 2018, from 457,000 tons in 2014 which is a 21% increase.   Frozen spinach and frozen broccoli are the two most favored products.

China

Edamame planting have begun, and harvest season expected to commence early July and will go through September.

Preparing Broccoli Seedlings For Planting
