Northwest Green Pea plantings are underway.   About 40% to 50% of the crop is planted with harvest expected to begin late May a bit earlier than usual.   Favorable spring weather conditions have allowed all planting to commence on time or a bit earlier than usual. Northwest corn plantings began last week with an expected harvest date of end July depending on heat units moving through June and July.

Potato plantings have also started here in Washington and Oregon.  We have heard grower prices are up by approximately 3.5%.  Due to the covid 19 virus and the abrupt challenges it has created in the market – foodservice sales are down, while retail sales are up – (this is the same situation for all frozen vegetables and fruits) With the uncertainty of forward market conditions and labor, processors must make decisions whether to decrease raw material contracts and growers are hoping that decisions will be made by the end of this week.

Washington State’s red raspberry crop was reduced by about 12% compared to last year due to rain during the harvest season which sent more product to juice.   I.Q.F Raspberry prices are on the rise and most processors are sold out.   This along with the tentative situation in Chile will make for a tight I.Q.F raspberry market.

Mexico

Broccoli and Cauliflower growing regions are currently in peak production.  Weather in Mexico has been sunny and warm.  All processors are now running at capacity with good yields and excellent quality.   Demand is high for cauliflower due to the rice cauliflower boom. 

Guatemala

Broccoli season in Guatemala is now completed.  All in all, it was a difficult year for Guatemala’s broccoli harvest due to weather issues and a reduced crop. Guatemala is now producing sugar snap peas, snow peas, Brussel sprouts, and mango.

Chile

Raspberry season was disappointing this year due to weather conditions including a drought.  Prices on Chilean raspberries have risen, and shortages are expected by about 30%.  Blueberry season is completed, and sweet corn harvest has commenced.  Due to drought and warm weather some are expecting yield reductions on sweet corn this season.

Europe

It has become more difficult to move product within Europe due to the Covid 19 virus.  Some of the major producing countries are now reporting cases of Covid 19 which will result in stricter movement regulations.

Hungary will begin planting sweet corn this month, however there is still a bit of uncertainly as how the Covid 19 virus will affect Hungary’s agriculture.

Thailand

Prolonged drought has reduced the raw material yields for sweet corn.  Prices remain high.   Thailand’s worst drought in 4 decades will affect all crops, including rice and sugar.   It will cost the economy US$1.9 billion, equivalent of 0.34% of Thailand’s gross domestic products.

China

Zhejiang Province

Green Bean and Edamame plantings will begin this month.

Fujian Province

Edamame planting will begin this month.

Shandong Province

Spinach and asparagus harvest will commence this month.

アメリカ合衆国

北西部でグリーンピースの植え付けが行われています。すでに40～50%が終了し、例年より少し早く、5月末には収穫が始まる見通しです。この春は天候に恵まれたおかげで、植え付けが例年並みか少し早めに始まりました。北西部のトウモロコシも、先週から植え付けが始まっていて、収穫は7月末の予定ですが、6、7月にかけての暑さにもよるでしょう。

ジャガイモも、ワシントン州とオレゴン州では植え付けが始まりました。生産者価格は3.5%前後上がっているとのことです。新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響で、外食産業は販売減、小売りは販売増という市場の変化が突如として起こりました（冷凍の野菜と果物すべてに共通しています）。販売市場も労働市場も先行きが不透明ななかで、加工業者は、原材料契約を減らすべきかどうかの決断を下さなければなりません。その決定が今週末にも出ることを、生産者は望んでいます。

ワシントン州のレッドラズベリーは、収穫が昨年と比べ約12%減となりました。収穫シーズンに雨に見舞われ、ジュース加工用に回された作物が多くなったためです。IQF（個別急速冷凍）加工用のラズベリーは、価格が上がっていて、ほとんどの加工業者で品切れの状態です。これに加え、チリの状況からの影響もあるため、IQFラズベリー市場は底堅くなるでしょう。

メキシコ

ブロッコリーとカリフラワーの生産地が、収穫の最盛期を迎えています。天候は、晴れて暖かな日が続いています。すべての加工業者が生産ラインをフル稼働させていて、量は十分にあり、質も上々です。カリフラワーは、ライスカリフラワーのブームで需要が高まっています。

グアテマラ

グアテマラのブロッコリーのシーズンは終了しました。全体として、今年はブロッコリーの収穫が天候のため不調に終わり、少なめの収穫となりました。グアテマラでは現在、スナップエンドウ、サヤエンドウ、メキャベツ、マンゴーが生産されています。

チリ

ラズベリーは、今年は不作となりました。雨不足をはじめ、天候によるものです。チリ産ラズベリーは値上がりしていて、約30%の不足が見込まれています。ブルーベリーのシーズンは完了し、スイートコーンの収穫が始まっています。日照りと暑気のため、今シーズンのスイートコーンは収穫量が減る見通しです。

ヨーロッパ

新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響により、ヨーロッパでは物流に困難が生じています。主な生産国のいくつかで感染者が報告されるようになっているため、今後さらに輸送規制が厳しくなるでしょう。

ハンガリーでは、今月からスイートコーンの植え付けが始まりますが、感染症が同国の農業に及ぼす影響は、現時点ではやや不透明です。

タイ

長期にわたる干ばつで、スイートコーンの原材料供給が減少しました。高値が続いています。過去40年間で最悪の干ばつは、米と砂糖を含むすべての作物に影響するでしょう。米ドルにして19億ドル、タイのGDPの0.34%に相当する被害となる模様です。
