Alibaba is helping China’s farmers survive the COVID-19 (Corona Virus) outbreak.

Many brick and mortar businesses in China have recently turned to video live streaming on “Taobao Live” to sell their products…and it’s working. Livestream sessions in February increased by 110% compared to same period last year.  With physical businesses closed in many cities and consumers confined to their homes, many in the farming community have turned to using online platforms.  Sales of fresh fruits and vegetables that otherwise would have gone to waste are now making it home to consumers through Alibaba’s Rural Support Program that was launched on February 6, 2020.

For NO CHARGE, farmers can use the Taobao Live platform to sell their fresh produce, and farmers across China now have the ability to connect with Taobao’s 41 million followers through its Foodie Livestream Channel.

But how about delivery? Alibaba’s logistic arm called Cainiao recently opened up new delivery routes for agricultural products through its network of truckers and logistic experts so that orders placed via Taobao Live ship within 72 hours to over 50 major cities in China.

Cainiao said it has mobilized 34 partners to create new and direct routes to transport truckloads of mangoes and melons from the southernmost tip of China all the way to cities like Beijing in three days and to Shanghai in just two.”

For those consumers that don’t want human contact…shoppers can place orders with Freshippo (Alibaba’s retail driven grocery chain) by using the Freshippo app and choosing the “non-contact” delivery option.

Anything else Alibaba?  Well – they’ve hired thirty renowned agricultural experts in China to identify and recommend solutions in the areas that are most affected by the Corona Virus.  And along with it, set up a RMB1billion fund (approximately US142 million) and another 10 measures to support farmers which includes a DINGTALK number for agricultural related issues! Since the launch of the Rural Support Program on February 6, 2020, an estimated 18,000 tons of agricultural products have been sold.

Teacher live streaming on Taobao education

Alibaba also encourages the use of live streaming for business to help more small and medium sized entrepreneurial businesses through Taobao University – it’s educational platform for e-commerce operators.  They provide free online courses for online marketing and live-hosting techniques to name just some of the offerings.

Taobao Live
