United States

The frequent bouts of snow, rain and extreme cold in the Midwest has left the soil saturated over almost the entire eastern half of the United States. Conditions in the Northwest (Oregon and Washington are not much better. Heavy snow and cold this winter season has left the ground frozen and still covered with snow in many areas. Pea and Potato plantings in the Pacific Northwest region, which normally begin at end of February /early March will be delayed a week or two, most likely bringing in these two crops later than usual. Expectations are for modest increases in price due to labor costs. We have been told to expect increases of .01/lb – .02/lb. for vegetables here in the Pacific Northwest. Most likely this trend will continue throughout all regions of the U.S.A.

Snow and cold will also affect blueberry and raspberry yields this coming season in the Northwest area. Some bushes had buds which were starting to open when the snow came. Yields will suffer but we do not know to what extent until harvest time.

Mexico

Based on the most recent issue of the Mexican Processors Association the year of 2018 goes down as the most challenging year in recent memory for harvesting of broccoli and cauliflower. The extended rainy season resulted in a 44% increase in cumulative rainfall. The rains have finally subsided, and the weather is warming up with supplies of both broccoli and cauliflower being replensished.  However the supply situation is still critical but getting better. Quality of both cauliflower and broccoli at this time are very good.

Strawberry season underway in Mexico. Crop is expected to come in about 20 – 25% short due to continued rains in Sept/Oct/Nov which flooded fields and caused damage to the plants.  The season got off to a late start by about 2 weeks and all indications are that  Mexican processors will be tight on strawberries this season. Harvesting is expected to run through May.

Guatemala

Sugar snap peas season is now underway and season is going well. Guatemala’s broccoli season is now winding down.

Ecuador

Recent rains in Ecuador has caused some yellowing of the broccoli being harvested there.

Europe

Processing Potatoes:  The most recent and final report from the North Western Potato Growers (NEPG) has advised a 18% reduction in potato yields this season. This is the lowest season in the past 6 years. Summer drought in Europe affected most items grown there, including carrots whose yields are down by approximately 15% to 25%

Spain

Rain in November has hurt broccoli transplants and product is expected to be in short supply through next autumn.

Chile

Green Pea season in Chile is now over and corn season is underway. To date all reports coming from Chile looks to be a good season for both peas and corn. Raspberry and Blueberry season is underway.

Japan

Reported by the Japan Times, “Price hikes for food and beverage products in Japan are expected to be implemented in March as manufacturers say they can no longer prevent soaring material and logistics costs from being passed on to consumers. Meiji Co., will mark up the prices of 23 ice cream products, while Nippon Flour Mills Co. will increase the prices of 16 frozen food items 5% to 13%.

Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan Inc. and Suntory Beverage & Food Ltd. plan to raise prices by around 18 cents, their first markups in 27 and 21 years, respectively.”

China

Zhejiang Province

Broccoli and Cauliflower harvest almost completed. Crop conditions were good, with nice quality and stable prices.

Pea Pods and Sugar Snap peas now being planted for the spring harvest.

Fuijan Province

Edamame:  Crop is healthy; however the new tariffs will play a large role in the coming season’s export of Edamame. Peak harvest is now underway. Water Chestnut harvest is underway and should continue for the next month. Cooler weather is bringing in lower yields , however the price remains stable.

Shandong Province

Edamame production has been completed. Lower crop yields and reduced acreage has kept prices firm. Domestic demand is strong as well. All production in this area is now completed and should start up again in April/May.

アメリカ合衆国

中西部を見舞った度重なる雪と雨と寒波のおかげで、米国の東側半分のほぼ全域で土壌の水分が高まりました。北西部（オレゴン州とワシントン州）の状況も、すこぶる良いとは言えません。この冬は寒くて雪も多かったため、多くの地域で今も畑が凍結していて、雪に覆われています。太平洋岸北西部では、例年であれば2月末から3月初めに行われるグリーンピースとジャガイモの植え付けが、1、2週間遅れる見込みです。したがって収穫も、例年より遅れる可能性が高いでしょう。価格は人件費の影響があるため、やや上がる見通しです。太平洋岸北西部の野菜は1ポンド（約454g）あたり1～2セントの値上げになると言われています。この傾向は、全米で継続すると見られます。

雪と寒さは、北西部のブルーベリーとラズベリーの来たるシーズンにも影響するでしょう。蕾が開き始めた矢先に雪に見舞われた場所もありました。収穫量は減る見通しですが、どの程度かは収穫期まで分かりません。

メキシコ

メキシコ加工業者協会の会報の最新号によると、ブロッコリーとカリフラワーの2018年の収穫は、最近の記憶のなかで最も困難な一年になるとのことです。雨期が長引き、総降雨量は44%増となりました。ようやく雨が止み、気温も上がっているため、ブロッコリーもカリフラワーも補充されつつあります。供給はなおも危機的な状況ですが、改善しつつあります。カリフラワーとブロッコリーの品質は、現時点ではどちらも非常に良好です。

メキシコではイチゴのシーズンが進行中です。収穫量は約20～25%減と予想されています。9～11月にかけて雨が多く、畑が水浸しになったために被害が出ました。シーズン開始は約2週間遅れとなっていて、今シーズンのメキシコ産イチゴは不足気味になるというのが、現時点での見通しです。収穫は5月いっぱい続く見通しです。

グアテマラ

スナップエンドウのシーズンが順調に進行しています。ブロッコリーのシーズンは収束しつつあります。

エクアドル

最近の雨で収穫中のブロッコリーが一部黄色くなりました。

ヨーロッパ

ジャガイモの加工：北西ヨーロッパジャガイモ生産者協会（NEPG）の最新かつ最終の報告によると、今シーズンのジャガイモの収穫量は18%減となりました。過去6年間で最低の数値です。ヨーロッパでは、夏の雨不足がほとんどの作物に影響しました。ニンジンは収穫量が約15～25%減となっています。

スペイン

11月の雨がブロッコリーの植え替えに影響しました。来秋まで供給不足となる見通しです。

チリ

チリではグリーンピースが終了し、トウモロコシのシーズンが進行中です。これまでのところ、グリーンピースもトウモロコシも良好なシーズンになる見通しです。ラズベリーとブルーベリーも収穫されています。

 

日本

ジャパンタイムズが次のように報じました。「日本では食品・飲料の値上げが3月に導入される見通しだ。物資と物流のコスト増を消費者に転嫁せざるを得ないとメーカーは説明している。明治はアイスクリーム23種を値上げし、日本製粉は冷凍食品16種を5～13%値上げする。

コカ･コーラボトラーズジャパンとサントリー食品インターナショナルも、18セント前後の値上げを予定している。コカ･コーラにとっては27年ぶり、サントリーにとっては21年ぶりの値上げだ」。

中国

浙江省

ブロッコリーとカリフラワーの収穫はほぼ終了しました。品質は良好で、価格は安定しています。

サヤエンドウとスナップエンドウは、現在、春作分の植え付けが行われています。

福建省

エダマメ：作物は良質ですが、これからのシーズンのエダマメの輸出には新しい関税が大きく影響すると見られます。今は収穫の最盛期です。シログワイは収穫が行われていて、あと1カ月は続くでしょう。気温が下がり、収穫量が減っていますが、価格は安定しています。

山東省

エダマメの生産は終了しました。収穫量が減り、作付面積も減ったため、価格は堅い状況です。国内需要も好調です。この地域では生産がすべて終了し、再開は4月か5月の予定です。
