Mexico

Coming off one of the worst years in history for processors of frozen broccoli and cauliflower, the situation is starting to look up. Conditions in the Bajio Valley where the majority of both broccoli and cauliflower are now being harvested is good as weather has warmed favoring both quality and volume. The weather forecast is for continued warm weather so the outlook remains positive. Current yields are good with enough volumes to cover commitments with processors at full capacity.

United States

Frozen fruit stocks in the U.S.A. are low. Both blueberries and cherries are at lower levels than the past year, while strawberries and raspberries show small increases compared to last year at this same time.

Raw material potatoes for processing in the Colombia Basin and Idaho are limited. Processors may be pulling raw material from Canada, however the high cost and limited truck availability could make this difficult. Some processor may have no other choice but to drastically drawn down finished product inventories in order to meet shipments. Growers will be anxious to get their crop’s planted in spring at the earliest possible time as it is expected that processor’s will be required to begin to use new season potatoes earlier than usual, most likely by end June/first week of July. 2018 potato crop is expected to begin planting this month. Some grower contracts have been set.

Northwest green pea plantings will begin this month.

Guatemala

Broccoli season will finish this month. Sugar snap peas, snow peas, okra and melon are now being processed with favorable weather conditions.

Europe

Numbers out from the North – Western European Potato Growers show harvest figures for 2017 potatoes at an increase of 17.2% compared to last season. The high production has depressed pricing. Due to adverse weather conditions the quality of the potatoes was not ideal with a high percent of low solids. This may result in lower yields which could help draw down raw material inventory.

Recent cold weather in Spain has reduced the size of the current strawberry crop there and prices have risen.

Chile:

Second pick harvest of Heritage raspberries has begun. The harvest start was delayed by abut 10 days due to rain and cold, however current weather conditions have been good and quality has improved. Sweet corn season is underway.

China: 

China has just finished up their New Year Holiday where they said goodbye to the year of the “Rooster” and hello to the year of the “Dog”. Factories will slowly begin to ramp up production this month. Recent snow did not bring too much of an impact on crops there and with the approach of spring the temperatures are starting to rise

Shandong Province

Due to the cold weather in Shandong all harvest activity is finished. Some factories are repacking products which are already in stock. Spinach production will commence later this month.

Zhejiang Province

Peak Broccoli production has begun. Higher price for raw material, along with increased labor and packaging cost has led to price increases this season. The warmer weather has resulted in pest occurrences.Cauliflower processing is also underway. Quality and prices remain stable. Pea pods and sugar snap peas are planted and the harvest is expected to begin in April. There is mention of increased prices this season due to exchange rates, packaging and labor costs.

Fujian Province

Water chestnut season is underway but will end this month. Due to the enormous demand from domestic and foreign markets the raw material prices rose sharply this season by over 15%. Along with freight, labor and packaging increases expect to pay more for your water chestnuts this season.

Mushroom production is winding down. Prices are high for raw material compared to last season. Quality is reported as good this season.

米国では冷凍果物の在庫が低下しています。ブルーベリーとチェリーはいずれも、昨年よりも低いレベルにあります。一方、イチゴとラズベリーは、昨年の同時期よりわずかに高めです。

コロンビア盆地とアイダホ州のジャガイモの加工用原材料は限られています。加工業者はカナダから原材料を入手するかもしれませんが、コストが高く、輸送用トラックにも限りがあるため、それも難しい可能性があります。一部の加工業者では、受注分を出荷するため、完成品の在庫レベルを著しく減らすよりほかに選択肢がないかもしれません。
生産者は、春の植え付けを一刻も早く始めたいと切望することになるでしょう。加工業者が例年よりも早く、おそらく6月末か7月第1週までには、新ジャガを使い始めなければならなくなると予想されるためです。2018年のジャガイモは、今月から植え付けが始まる見通しです。すでに契約が完了した生産者も出ています。

北西部のグリーンピースは、今月から植え付けが始まります。

メキシコ

冷凍のブロッコリーとカリフラワーの加工業者にとって、昨年は史上最悪に近い一年でしたが、状況が好転し始めました。現在ブロッコリーとカリフラワーの大多数を出荷しているバヒオバレーでは気温が上がり、質と量を向上させています。今後も暖かい天候が続くという予報ですので、明るい見通しです。現在の収穫量は、契約を満たすのに十分です。加工業者はフル操業をしています。

グアテマラ

ブロッコリーのシーズンは今月終了です。スナップエンドウ、サヤエンドウ、オクラ、メロンが加工されていて、天候に恵まれています。

ヨーロッパ

ヨーロッパ北西部ジャガイモ生産者協会の調べによると、2017年のジャガイモの収穫量は前シーズンと比べて17.2%増でした。この収穫増により、価格は下がりました。天候に恵まれなかったため、ジャガイモの品質は良いとは言えず、固体比重の低い作物が多くなっています。この結果、加工用原材料としての量は少なくなり、原材料在庫を引き下げる可能性があります。

スペインでは最近の寒さでイチゴの実が小さくなり、価格が上昇しました。

チリ

ヘリテージ種のラズベリーの2度目の収穫が始まっています。降雨と寒気のせいで収穫開始が10日ほど遅れましたが、現在の天候はまずまずで、品質も改善しました。スイートコーンのシーズンは進行中です。

中国

中国では旧正月の祝日が終わったばかりです。酉年から戌年になりました。工場は今月、徐々に生産量が戻り始めるでしょう。最近の雪は、畑の作物にはあまり影響を及ぼしませんでした。春が近付き、気温が上がり始めています。

山東省

山東省では、冷え込みを受けて、すべての収穫が終了しました。一部の工場では、すでに貯蔵されていた製品の袋詰めをやり直しています。ホウレンソウは、今月中に生産が始まるでしょう。

浙江省

ブロッコリーが最盛期に入りました。原材料価格が上がっているうえ、人件費と梱包資材費も上がっているため、今シーズンの価格は上昇しています。暖かくなったせいで、害虫が発生しました。カリフラワーも加工されています。品質、価格ともに引き続き安定しています。エンドウマメとスナップエンドウは、植え付けが終わり、4月には収穫が始まる見通しです。今シーズンは、為替相場や梱包資材費と人件費を理由とした値上がりの話は聞こえてきていません。

福建省

シログワイのシーズンは継続していますが、今月には終了するでしょう。国内外の両方から大きな需要があるため、今シーズンの原材料価格は15%以上高騰しています。輸送費、人件費、梱包資材費も上がっていますので、今シーズンはシログワイが値上がりする見通しです。

マッシュルームは、まもなく生産終了です。原材料価格は昨年よりも高くなっています。今シーズンの品質は良好と伝えられています。
